The Town of Cutler Bay will give away free backpacks and host a family celebration before the new school year begins.

The town's "Backpacks & Blue: A National Night Out Celebration" is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 SW 200th St. The event is free and open to the public.

Backpacks will be distributed while supplies last. The evening will also feature food, children's activities, giveaways and a live DJ, according to the town's Parks & Recreation Department. Baptist Health is sponsoring the event.

Residents can meet local deputies

The event doubles as Cutler Bay's observance of National Night Out, the annual community-policing campaign held on the first Tuesday in August since 1984. Residents will have an opportunity to meet the town's deputy sheriffs in an informal setting.

No registration or RSVP is required.
