Families at Cutler Bay Middle School and Coral Reef Elementary School will see a question on the Tuesday, Nov. 3 ballot: whether to keep funding teacher pay supplements and school safety across Miami-Dade County.

Both schools, which serve Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay families, posted referendum renewal guides on their websites urging parents to learn about the Secure Our Future measure before Election Day. Coral Reef Elementary's site carried the same guide. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) scheduled nine town hall meetings with community resource fairs where families could meet Superintendent Rafael Villalobos and hear details about the renewal.

Villalobos is now making the case directly.

"Can you imagine if we didn't have this supplemental pay to make our teachers competitive enough to stay in Miami-Dade County Public Schools?" Villalobos said, as first reported by WSVN.

Villalobos warned that losing the money would be "detrimental to Miami-Dade County Public Schools as a whole." The district could lose high-quality teachers and struggle to attract new ones because of the cost of living in Miami-Dade County, he said. He also pointed to school police officers who protect children, communities and schools.

The town hall meetings each included a community resource fair from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the main session from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Specific dates and locations were listed on flyers linked from school websites.

Voters first approved the levy in 2018 and renewed it in 2022, WSVN reported. The district says the proposal would continue teacher and instructional personnel salary supplements and school safety and security funding for another four years. Residents should consult their official sample ballot for the measure and voting selections.
