Miami-Dade County is constructing a new Corrections and Rehabilitation Department campus adjacent to the Turner Guilford Knight Detention Facility at 7000 NW 41st St. in Miami. The facility processes every arrest made by police serving Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay, along with 28 other municipalities countywide.

The project will add a Booking and Release Center, a four-story Corrections Headquarters, a centralized warehouse, a 500-car parking garage and canine facilities, according to a county report published Sunday.

New booking center will consolidate intake and courtrooms

The Booking and Release Center will consolidate intake, first appearances and temporary holding into a single facility adjacent to TGK. It will house up to 195 arrestees, a large vehicle sallyport, medical and classification areas, records offices and four courtrooms. The Clerk of Courts, State Attorney and Public Defender will use those courtrooms for first appearances.

The four-story headquarters building will include fitness facilities, training rooms, dining areas and collaborative workspaces with natural lighting.

NELSON Worldwide is providing design services for the project, according to Justice Design News, which reported that construction was estimated to begin in March. The county's July 26 report describes the project as underway but does not specify a completion date or total cost.

Every arrest from Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay routes through TGK

The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department processes inmates for all 30 municipal police departments in the county, including the Miami-Dade Police Department, which provides law enforcement for Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay. Every arrest made by MDPD officers patrolling these communities goes through the county's corrections system for booking, classification and first court appearances.

No budget or opening date announced yet

No opening date or project budget has been publicly released. Manny Cid, assistant director of Small and Local Business Development for Miami-Dade County, wrote in the July 26 county report that the campus will "modernize critical detention operations and improve services throughout the criminal justice system."
