What's on the ballot

Miami-Dade voters face statewide races, constitutional amendments and local contests that vary by municipality, Caribbean National Weekly reported.

Amendment 3, a proposed change to the Florida Constitution, would raise the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, according to NBC Miami. It also would lower the annual cap on assessed-value increases for non-homestead properties from 10% to 5%. The amendment needs 60% approval to pass.

Several jurisdictions have described the measure as a potential hit to their revenue, NBC Miami reported. The Florida Sheriffs Association has warned that reduced property-tax revenue could affect public safety funding. Miami-Dade Property Appraiser Tomás Regalado and County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz have expressed support.

Cutler Bay races

Cutler Bay has one of the most crowded local ballots in South Miami-Dade. With Mayor Tim Meerbott term-limited, four candidates are running for the job, Political Cortadito reported. Council members Robert "B.J." Duncan and Suzy Lord are both seeking the mayor's seat. They face builder Ricardo De Melo Gomes and tech and entertainment entrepreneur Clint Rodriguez, who is campaigning under the bilingual slogan "Same Town. New Chapter."

Duncan's open Seat 1 drew three candidates: Ricky Fernandez, James Richie Hawkins and Mary Ann Mixon. In Seat 3, Commissioner Richard Ramirez faces Rene Gomez.

If no candidate wins outright Nov. 3, Cutler Bay runoffs would follow Dec. 1, Political Cortadito reported. Palmetto Bay runoffs, if needed, would also fall on Dec. 1.

Voters who registered by Oct. 5 are eligible. They must present a valid photo ID with a signature, such as a Florida driver's license, a debit or credit card with a photo, a student ID, a retirement center ID or a public assistance ID, according to the Florida Division of Elections.

Mail ballots can be dropped off at early voting sites. The deadline to request a mail ballot is Thursday, Oct. 22, at 5 p.m. Completed mail ballots must reach the elections office by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3. A postmark does not count.
