Miami-Dade committee backs $387.7 million transitway agreement, 507-day contract extension
Miami-Dade County's South Corridor TransitWay project moved closer to a contract extension Wednesday, Oct. 14, after a county committee unanimously recommended approval of a supplemental agreement carrying a $387.7 million total fiscal impact.
The Transportation Committee voted 4-0 to forward the agreement to the Board of County Commissioners, according to the official meeting record.
The agreement involves OHLA USA Inc., the contractor responsible for designing and building the 20-mile bus rapid transit corridor between SW 344th Street and Dadeland South Metrorail Station.
The corridor serves communities including Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay, Pinecrest, Homestead and Florida City, connecting South Dade riders to Metrorail service at Dadeland South.
Contract extension adds 507 days
The proposed supplemental agreement would extend the design-build contract by 507 calendar days and add 51 days of contingency time.
The revised contract would cover 1,884 calendar days, with a 189-day contingency period.
The resolution also calls for replenishing contingency funds previously used during construction.
The agreement lists a total fiscal impact of $387,681,818.42, to be funded from project contingency resources, and authorizes the use of Charter County Transportation Surtax funds.
That figure represents the fiscal impact identified in the proposed agreement and should not be interpreted as an entirely new $387.7 million appropriation without further clarification from county officials.
The project was added to the People's Transportation Plan in February 2020.
Metro Express service began in October 2025
The South Dade TransitWay's Metro Express bus rapid transit service began operating Oct. 27, 2025, according to Miami-Dade County's official transit website.
The all-electric service connects the SW 344th Street Park-and-Ride with Dadeland South Metrorail Station through 14 new bus rapid transit stations.
The county's South Dade TransitWay project page reported that construction was 99% complete as of October 2025 and that all 14 stations had been completed.
The corridor includes dedicated bus lanes, traffic signal priority technology, intersection safety gates and air-conditioned station waiting areas.
OHLA USA said in an Oct. 1, 2026, news release that the project had received multiple industry awards for transportation construction and sustainability.
The company reported substantially completing its original design-build work by the end of 2025.
The proposed contract extension concerns the project's construction agreement, not a postponement of the bus service's opening.
Pinecrest roundabout improvements also advance
At the same meeting, the Transportation Committee voted 4-0 to recommend a separate agreement allowing the Village of Pinecrest to install and maintain entrance features within two existing roundabouts.
The roundabouts are located at SW 136th Street and SW 67th Avenue, and SW 136th Street and Old Cutler Road.
Commissioner Raquel A. Regalado sponsored the resolution, which would authorize an intergovernmental agreement between the county and Pinecrest.
The agreement would allow the village to install and maintain the features at both intersections.
Full commission approval still required
Both resolutions were forwarded to the Miami-Dade County Commission with favorable recommendations but had not received final approval as of Oct. 16.
The commission's next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 9:30 a.m., according to the 2026 commission calendar.
The supplemental transitway agreement and Pinecrest roundabout agreement would require full commission approval before taking effect.
