David Singer, a former Palmetto Bay councilmember and CPA, has qualified to run for mayor in the village's Nov. 3 general election.

Singer is one of three candidates seeking to replace Mayor Karyn Cunningham, who is term-limited. Tamara Mourino and Karen Baez-Wallis also qualified for the ballot, according to the village's official candidate list. A fourth candidate, John DuBois, withdrew June 18.

Singer registered his candidacy Feb. 21, 2025, and officially qualified Aug. 4. He appeared on the Grant Miller Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, outlining a platform built around fiscal responsibility, transparency, public safety and protecting the community's quality of life.

His campaign slogan: "Restore Leadership. Restore Palmetto Bay."

Singer described himself as a Florida CPA with municipal budgeting and management experience in the Miami Herald's November 2024 voter guide, when he ran unsuccessfully for Council Seat 2. He lost that race to incumbent Steve Cody, who had first defeated Singer for the same seat in 2020.

In that 2024 voter guide, Singer identified the village's most pressing problem as "an unacceptable increase in taxes, traffic, development and wasteful spending." He is now carrying similar themes into the mayoral contest, pledging to strengthen financial discipline and support what Florida Politics described as "smart growth."

His two opponents bring different backgrounds. Baez-Wallis is a registered nurse with more than 30 years of experience, including executive roles in trauma and emergency services, according to Florida Politics. She is running on public safety, government transparency and stopping overdevelopment. Mourino is a longtime Palmetto Bay resident and small-business owner focused on preserving the village's bedroom-community character and protecting green space.

All three seats on the ballot are open because their current holders are term-limited. Besides the mayor's office, Councilmember Seat 1 and Councilmember Seat 3 are also up for election. If no mayoral candidate wins more than 50% of the vote, a runoff is scheduled for Dec. 1.

The voter registration deadline is Oct. 5. Residents can request a vote-by-mail ballot through Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. More information is available from the Village Clerk at (305) 259-1234 or at palmettobay-fl.gov.
