Families in Cutler Bay can catch a free Halloween orchestra concert, outdoor movie and dance party at the Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center on Friday, Oct. 23.
The annual Spooky Symphony pairs the Alhambra Orchestra, led by Maestro Daniel Andai, with the Greater Miami Youth Symphony for two 45-minute performances on the Main Stage at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The combined orchestra will play themes from Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings while visuals roll on a giant screen, Community Newspapers first reported. The Alhambra Orchestra's concert listing adds Ghostbusters to the program and notes that musicians perform in costume. Audience members are encouraged to dress up too.
The Spooky Symphony collaboration between the two orchestras dates to 2010, according to the Greater Miami Youth Symphony's history page. The Children's Trust has sponsored the free event since its early years.
The concert is one piece of a larger evening that starts at 6 p.m. and fills multiple rooms at the Moss Center, located at 10950 SW 211th St.
In the Black Box Theater, Miami Children's Museum hosts a Halloween Dance Party with learn-a-dance sessions, a children's costume parade from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and DJ sets. The Lab Theater features dance performances by Mater Academy Bay Middle School's Rayettes, Adrenaline Dance Company and South Dade Senior High School's Sapphires Dance Team throughout the evening.
On the back lawn, families can bring lawn chairs and blankets for an outdoor screening of Monsters, Inc. from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. A classroom offers Halloween coloring from 6 to 9 p.m., and candy giveaways run throughout the evening while supplies last.
Free tickets become available Friday, Oct. 9, at MossCenter.org, at the Moss Center box office or by calling (786) 573-5300. All seating is general admission, first come, first served.
