The Original Rainbow Cone, a Chicago ice cream brand turning 100 this year, opened its first South Florida location Monday, Sept. 28, at 14475 S. Dixie Highway in Palmetto Bay.

The shop at King's Bay Shopping Center is owned by Sara and Jason DePalma, Chicago transplants who have lived in South Florida for 20 years. Opening-day festivities included a ribbon-cutting and free cones for the first 100 guests, the Miami New Times reported.

Sara DePalma said the brand has been part of the couple's story since their earliest dates in Chicago. "We hope to build something that belongs to Palmetto Bay as much as it belongs to us," she said.

The brand's signature item stacks five vertical slices of ice cream on a single cone: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (New York vanilla with cherries and walnuts), pistachio, and orange sherbet. Each bite includes all five flavors.

Beyond the namesake cone, the Palmetto Bay menu lists regular scoops, milkshakes, sundaes, ice cream cakes, made-to-order mini donuts and "Sliced Creations" that combine two or three flavors using the same slicing technique.

The DePalmas are also launching a tropical-styled ice cream truck with a battery-powered kitchen. The truck will travel to schools, youth programs, community events and private parties around the area. Jason DePalma told the New Times before the opening that the business plans to hire young workers and support local organizations through a "Cone for a Cause" program.

Joe "Grandpa Joe" Sapp and his wife Katherine founded Rainbow Cone in 1926 on a dirt road in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, according to the Miami Herald. The chain now has more than 30 locations across the Midwest, California and Orlando. The shop features indoor and outdoor seating with the brand's pink-and-white décor.
