The Moss Center in Cutler Bay hosts its free Spooky Symphony and Halloween celebration Friday, Oct. 23. The evening packs two live orchestra concerts, a dance party, local student showcases and an outdoor movie across four venues.
Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center, 10950 SW 211th St. Every activity is free. Seating is general admission, first-come, first-served, according to Miami's Community Newspapers.
The Alhambra Orchestra and Greater Miami Youth Symphony perform together for two 45-minute concerts on the Main Stage at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The program draws from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Men in Black, Pokémon GO, Beetlejuice and Pirates of the Caribbean, with imagery projected on a giant screen.
The Miami Herald noted the musicians will perform in costume. The Children's Trust sponsors the event in partnership with the Moss Center.
Beyond the Main Stage, three venues run programming all evening.
In the Black Box Theater, Miami Children's Museum hosts a Halloween dance party. A "Learn a Dance!" session runs from 6 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a children's costume parade from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. DJ dance parties fill the 7:30-to-8 p.m. and 8:30-to-9 p.m. slots, with a second dance lesson from 8 to 8:30 p.m.
In the Lab Theater, three local dance groups rotate on stage. Mater Academy Bay Middle School's Rayettes perform at 6:15 and 6:45 p.m., Adrenaline Dance Company at 7:15 and 7:45 p.m., and South Dade Senior High School's Sapphires Dance Team at 8:15 and 8:45 p.m.
On the back lawn, families can bring lawn chairs and blankets for an outdoor screening of Monsters, Inc. from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. A classroom offers Halloween coloring activities from 6 to 9 p.m., and candy giveaways continue throughout the evening while supplies last.
Free tickets are available at MossCenter.org, at the Moss Center box office in person, or by calling 786-573-5300. Accessibility accommodations can be requested through Stephanie Aponte at 786-573-5314 or [email protected] at least five days before the event.
