Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay could see 2 to 5 inches of rain Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20, as an upper-level low pushes an 80% chance of storms across South Florida.

Marginal Flood Risk Runs Through Sunday

The region is under a marginal flood threat, rated level 1 of 4, from Friday, Sept. 18, through Sunday, Sept. 20, according to WPLG Local 10 meteorologist John Gerard. Parts of South Florida had already absorbed 3 to 6 inches of rain during the week, Gerard reported, and several more inches could fall before the pattern breaks.

That matters here. Both communities sit on flat terrain with canal and stormwater networks that can overflow during heavy rain, according to their respective flood-awareness materials. The Village of Palmetto Bay has warned that flash flooding is more likely when leaves and debris clog the stormwater system, according to an official village post.

Slow-Moving Storms Could Repeat Heavy Downpours

"Weak steering winds could lead to slow-moving storms and repeated heavy downpours, keeping the localized flooding threat elevated," WSVN-Channel 7 meteorologist Vivian Gonzalez wrote Sept. 18, adding that storms will be heaviest during the afternoon and early evening.

Stronger cells could dump 1 to 3 inches per hour, according to Gonzalez's forecast. Rain chances are expected to stay high into at least midweek, around Sept. 23, according to WSVN.

Both Towns Have Recent Flooding History

On Sept. 13, a flood advisory specifically named Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay after 1 to 2 inches fell with more on the way, according to WSVN's 7 Weather team. No formal National Weather Service watch or warning naming either community had been issued for the Sept. 19-20 weekend as of the afternoon of Sept. 18. Updated watches and warnings are posted at weather.gov.

The Town of Cutler Bay's flood awareness page identifies flash flooding from overburdened drainage as a key local risk and warns that as little as 2 feet of running water can carry away most vehicles. Cutler Bay Public Works can be reached at 305-234-4262 for flood zone questions.

Drainage Projects Are Coming, but Not Yet

Two infrastructure projects are in the works but will not be ready for the Sept. 19-20 storms. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins announced in May 2026 that flood relief and stormwater improvements are headed to Cutler Bay at SW 216th Street and Old Cutler Road. In Palmetto Bay, a drainage improvement project near SW 168th to SW 171st streets is scheduled to begin in mid-October, according to the village's project page.
