Cutler Bay residents can learn how to properly fit a bicycle helmet at a free training session Monday, July 20, at Franjo Park. Only 20 spots are available.
The Town of Cutler Bay is partnering with PedBike SRC, the Florida Pedestrian and Bicycling Safety Resource Center, for the two-hour session running from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 20175 Franjo Road. Participants will learn how to fit and adjust a helmet so it protects the rider in a crash.
The session falls during the summer months when childhood bicycle accidents peak, according to national safety data. Under Florida law, riders under 16 must wear a helmet meeting federal safety standards, though safety organizations recommend helmets for all ages.
A helmet that doesn't fit correctly offers significantly less protection. The training covers proper strap adjustment, helmet positioning, and sizing for different head shapes, according to the town's announcement on its Parks & Recreation website.
PedBike SRC is housed at the University of Florida's Transportation Technology Transfer Center and funded by the Florida Department of Transportation Safety Office. The organization provides helmet fitter certification training across the state and distributes free helmets to certified community partners. The group's mission, according to its website, is promoting safe pedestrian and bicycling activities for Florida residents of all ages.
The event is free and open to all community members. There is no online registration. To sign up or get more information, call the Cutler Bay Parks & Recreation Office at (786) 573-5502.
With the 20-participant cap, the town encourages early sign-up. The Parks & Recreation Office is located at 10720 Caribbean Boulevard, Suite 225, in Cutler Bay.
