Three Miami-Dade Fire Rescue members brought home a second-place finish from the 2026 World Firefighter Challenge Championships in Las Vegas.
Capt. Rob Sheppard Jr., Capt. Rick Stephens and Lt. Pete Marrero placed second in the Fire Department Municipal Team Relay, the department announced on X on Oct. 28.
The three competed against more than 380 firefighters representing 207 fire departments from 21 countries, according to the department's post.
What the competition involves
The competition is often described as the toughest two minutes in sports, according to KLAS.
Now in its 35th year, the World Firefighter Challenge Championship tests strength, endurance, speed and teamwork. KLAS reported that the event was held at the Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas.
Competitors run an obstacle course in full firefighting gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus. They climb a five-story tower, hoist equipment, complete chopping tasks, drag hoses and rescue a 165-pound dummy, all against the clock.
The championship features three categories: individual, tandem and relay. Relay teams include three to five participants.
