Palmetto Bay families will have a new place to swim this summer when the Barbara and Philip Wong Aquatic Center opens at the South Dade YMCA Family Center on SW 134th Street.
The pool complex will be the first aquatic facility at the South Dade YMCA since it began serving the community in 2013. It will feature a lap pool, a shallow entry pool, swim lessons and water safety education for all ages, aqua fitness classes, open swim and a competitive swim team.
The center is named for Barbara and Philip Wong, whose donation funded the project. Philip Wong is the founder and head of Deltana, a Florida-based architectural hardware supplier.
The South Dade YMCA, at 9355 SW 134th St., serves more than 18,000 people annually across Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Kendall and the broader South Dade area. Its existing programs include basketball and volleyball academies, indoor pickleball, group fitness classes and the Miami Heat Learn & Play Center presented by Florida Blue for youth and teens.
Summer campers will also benefit. The YMCA's camp program lists daily swim lessons as a coming addition once the pool opens.
No specific opening date or ribbon-cutting event has been announced. Pool hours are listed as "coming soon" on the YMCA website. The facility's regular hours are Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
