Westminster Christian quarterback Anthony Vera landed a nomination for the Miami Herald's High School Athlete of the Week to open the 2026-27 school year.
The junior was one of eight Broward and Miami-Dade athletes nominated for the Week 1 honor, announced Friday, Sept. 4. Ransom Everglades linebacker Albert Uster won the fan vote.
Nomination Follows Strong Season-Opening Performance
Vera's nomination followed the Palmetto Bay school's season opener. Westminster Christian routed St. Brendan 49-7 on Friday, Aug. 21, and Vera has compiled 567 passing yards through the season's first two weeks, ranking him 14th in Florida according to MaxPreps' statistical leaders as of Sept. 1.
Gold-Medal Effort at Junior International Cup
The recognition follows a productive summer for the Warriors quarterback. In August, Vera and Westminster Christian teammate Britton Bayag led the U.S. 17U boys' national team to a 49-42 gold-medal win over Canada at USA Football's Junior International Cup in Los Angeles.
Across six tournament games, Vera completed 132-of-181 passes (72.9%) for 1,775 yards, 36 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Miami Herald called it one of the most prolific quarterback performances in Junior International Cup history.
In the gold-medal game, Vera went 25-of-35 for 323 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. He connected with Carson Pope 12 times for 164 yards and two scores.
Fourth Gold Medal, Most Decorated Career
The gold was Vera's fourth at the event. He won 15U titles in 2023 and 2024, then 17U titles in 2025 and 2026. He and Bayag are the most decorated athletes in the Junior National Team program's history.
Vera earned Miami Herald All-Dade honorable mention in 2025 and was named Sports Illustrated's South Florida High School Football Player of the Week in September 2025 for his play against Pine Crest.
