Coral Reef's volleyball team lost its first match of the season Monday, Aug. 31, falling 3-2 at home to Miami Palmetto Senior High.

The Barracudas traded sets with the Panthers through four rounds before Palmetto ran away with the fifth, 15-2, to seal the win. The result pushed Palmetto to 5-0 on the season, according to the Miami Herald's compiled results by Jim Varsallone.

Two Palmetto sophomores powered the victory. Julieta Beyer led all players with 25 kills and added 14 digs. Thea Fonseca was right behind her with 24 kills on a .657 hitting percentage and two solo blocks.

Junior setter Peyton Banens quarterbacked the offense, piling up 63 set assists, 16 digs and four aces.

The match seesawed from the opening serve. Palmetto took the first set 25-23, but Coral Reef answered with a 26-24 win in the second. The Panthers grabbed the third set 25-17, and the Barracudas clawed back again in the fourth, winning 29-27 to force a deciding fifth set.

Coral Reef had little answer in the finale. Palmetto scored early and often, closing the set 15-2.

Upcoming schedules for both teams had not been posted as of Tuesday, Sept. 1. Palmetto carries its 5-0 record into the next week of play.
