A Homestead man faces attempted second-degree murder charges in a 2024 shootout near Franjo Park that sent families at a children's baseball game diving for cover.

Brandon Vickers, 40, was arrested Thursday in connection with the Oct. 21, 2024, shooting in front of 20151 SW 89th Ave. in Cutler Bay, WPLG Local 10 News reported, citing a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office arrest report. He was being held at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center as of Sept. 14.

Witnesses Identify Suspect, Fleeing Vehicle

Two witnesses identified Vickers as one of the shooters, according to the arrest report. They also recorded video of the vehicle Vickers allegedly occupied as it fled.

Victims Struck by Gunfire, Hospitalized

Investigators allege Vickers and several other people arrived in two stolen vehicles with unassigned license plates and opened fire toward the victims at about 7:45 p.m. One person was struck in the right thigh and another in the right ankle. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported both to Jackson South Medical Center.

The two victims were later found at a nearby gas station but refused to cooperate with the investigation, according to the arrest report.

Suspect's Prior Felony Record Detailed

Vickers also faces a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The arrest report states he had prior felony convictions dating to May 2017 for dealing in stolen property, providing false information to a pawnbroker and possession of a controlled substance. The report also noted Vickers had previously been involved in gang-related shootings connected to people associated with the victims.

Chaos Erupted During Children's Game

The gunfire erupted while a children's baseball game was underway at Franjo Park, located at 20175 Franjo Road. In October 2024, Mickey Lopez, head coach of one of the youth teams on the field, described the scene to Local 10.

"I don't know how we ended up behind home plate, but that's where we hunkered down with the kids," Lopez said at the time, adding that coaches threw their bodies over the children.

The chaos spread fast. Steve Flyn, a grandparent at the game with his 8-year-old grandson, told Local 10 in October 2024 that parents were yelling for everyone to get down and that his wife jumped under a picnic table. Resident Jose Madrid's car was struck by more than a dozen bullets. Investigators also found shell casings at a nearby Amoco gas station and barbershop.

Neighbor Barbara Mesa told Local 10 at the time that she had noticed fewer police patrols in the area and worried about the safety of her 9-year-old grandson, who plays baseball at the park.

Investigation Into Other Suspects Continues

The search continues for others involved in the shooting. Anyone with information can call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
