A Miami-Tokyo experimental collective will transform the Deering Estate theater into an extended sonic environment on Sunday, Aug. 16. The performance is free and open to the public.
jamJam Strawberry performs "Strawberry Sweets" at 4 p.m. in the Visitor Center Theater at 7220 S.W. 168th St. The durational performance blends electroacoustic percussion, live processing and networked collaboration. Admission is free. An RSVP through Eventbrite is required.
About the collective
The collective formed through long-distance digital file exchanges between artists in Miami and Tokyo, building a sound language rooted in granular synthesis, glitch aesthetics and soft electronics. The Aug. 16 show features performers Sony Mao and Emile Milgrim, with participation by original contributor Øivind Idsø and Tokyo-based sound artist and singer Moskitoo, also known as Sanae Yamasaki. Media support comes from Barron Sherer and Deering Estate resident artist Freddy Jouwayed.
The program includes the premiere of a new installment in the Strawberry Sweets series alongside earlier works.
Part of a bigger series
The performance is the third installment in "Subtropics: Audible Fields at Deering Estate," a five-episode series of immersive listening experiences curated by composer and intermedia artist Gustavo Matamoros, according to Community Newspapers. The series, supported by Miami-Dade County, brings together experimental music, moving image, radio art and spatial sound practices at the estate's recently upgraded theater, which now features updated projection, lighting and surround sound.
