Palmetto Bay park hosts volunteer cleanup Sept. 5

Palmetto Bay residents can pull invasive plants and plant native species at Bill Sadowski Park on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Miami EcoAdventures, a program of the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, is holding its monthly EcoAction Day volunteer event at the 30-acre park from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The park sits at 17555 SW 79th Ave.

County naturalists will lead volunteers through three tasks: removing invasive vegetation, planting native species and picking up litter, according to the event's Eventbrite listing. Registration is required. Residents can sign up in advance through ParkLink at miamidadeparks.com.

Bill Sadowski Park holds three distinct habitats: pineland, tropical hardwood hammock and a drained Everglades slough, according to Miami-Dade County Parks. The main building houses a live animal exhibit featuring native freshwater fish, arthropods, reptiles and amphibians. A nature trail winds through the property to a canal where canoeing and fishing are available, and the grounds include a native tree arboretum and a bird-watching area.

Students who volunteer will receive community service hours at the end of the morning. The hours are not available for anyone completing court-mandated service requirements.

Children under 13 must have a parent or guardian with them.

Miami EcoAdventures said the program is subject to change or cancellation based on minimum participation and weather conditions. Residents with questions can call 305-666-5885.

South Dade Spotlight first listed the Sept. 5 date in its weekend roundup. EcoAction Days run monthly at Bill Sadowski and other Miami-Dade nature centers, though no October date at this park has been announced.
